Abstract

Science literacy ability is one of the important literacy aspects that must be mastered by elementary education students, as they will become elementary school teachers in their role as facilitators in science learning. The purpose of this study was to analyze the science literacy ability in the competency aspect of students in the Elementary School Teacher Education Program at FKIP Ahmad Dahlan University. The study employed a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis method. Data were collected through science literacy tests, questionnaires, and interviews with 43 students. Data analysis followed the Miles and Huberman model including data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that science literacy ability in the competency aspect fell into the "good" category with an average of 74%. In detail, the ability to use scientific evidence achieved the highest score of 78%, the ability to identify scientific issues was 74%, while the ability to explain scientific phenomena was the lowest at 70%. Factors influencing students' science literacy ability include interest in science, learning motivation, lecturers' teaching strategies, availability of facilities and infrastructure, and differences in educational background. The study recommends the need to develop contextual and applicative learning strategies to optimize the science literacy competency of prospective elementary school teachers in order to improve the quality of national science education.
