Abstract

This research was motivated by the use of diverse language in mass media. Language variation in a text needs to consider semantic relations to ensure that the information conveyed is clear and easy to understand. One way to maintain coherence of meaning in a text is through the use of semantic relations. Therefore, this study aims to identify the types of semantic relations found in opinion articles on Kompas.id and to explain their forms based on John Lyons' theory. This study employed a qualitative method. The data were collected from 12 opinion articles published on Kompas.id using observation and note-taking techniques. The data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, which consists of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that there were 44 instances of semantic relations classified into five types: synonymy, antonymy, homonymy, hyponymy, and polysemy. These semantic relations were found at the word and phrase levels, while no semantic relations were found at the sentence level. The findings indicate that semantic relations contribute to maintaining coherence of meaning in opinion texts and support language variation without reducing clarity. Thus, semantic relations play an important role in constructing opinion texts so that the intended message can be conveyed clearly and understood by readers.
