Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the effect of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model on students’ learning activities and learning outcomes in the topic of environmental change and environmental conservation among tenth-grade students at SMAN 14 Medan. The research employed a quasi-experimental method using a Pretest-Posttest Non-equivalent Control Group Design. The sample was selected through purposive sampling and consisted of two classes: Class X-7 as the experimental group, which received instruction using the Problem Based Learning model, and Class X-8 served as the control class, utilizing conventional instruction based on the direct instruction model. Data were collected through both non-test and test techniques. The non-test instrument consisted of an observation sheet used to assess students’ learning activities, while the test instrument consisted of 20 multiple-choice questions used to measure students’ learning outcomes. The research results indicate that the implementation of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model has a positive impact on students' learning activities and learning outcomes. Students taught using the PBL model demonstrated higher levels of engagement during the learning process and achieved better learning outcomes compared to students taught via the conventional Direct Instruction model. These findings suggest that the PBL model is more effective in enhancing student engagement and understanding of the learning material. Statistical analysis revealed significance values of 0.023 (p < 0.05) for learning activities and 0.000 (p < 0.05) for learning outcomes. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model significantly influences the learning activities and learning outcomes of Grade X students at SMAN 14 Medan regarding the topic of environmental change and conservation.
