Abstract

The rapid rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) usage among university students has not been matched by improvement in critical thinking ability, raising concern that heavy reliance on AI-generated answers may substitute for, rather than support, independent reasoning. This gap between widespread AI adoption and still-suboptimal student critical thinking underlies this study, which aims to examine the influence of AI usage on the critical thinking ability of Business Education students, Class of 2024, at State University of Medan. A quantitative ex post facto design was employed, involving all 86 students of the cohort through total sampling. Data were collected using two Likert-scale questionnaires measuring AI usage and critical thinking ability, tested for validity and reliability, and analyzed through simple linear regression using SPSS version 26. Both instruments proved reliable, with Cronbach's Alpha of 0.768 for AI usage and 0.820 for critical thinking. The regression analysis produced the equation Y = 25.043 + 0.782X, with t = 7.417 and significance of 0.000 (p < 0.05), confirming that AI usage significantly predicts critical thinking ability. The coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.396 indicates that AI usage accounts for 39.6% of the variance in critical thinking, the remaining 60.4% explained by other factors beyond this study. These findings suggest AI can serve as a valuable learning partner that strengthens analytical, evaluative, and reflective thinking, provided it is used deliberately rather than as a shortcut for instant answers.
