Abstract

This research aims to analyze the influence of arts education during colonialism on the development of the Independent Curriculum in Indonesia. Art education during the colonial period emphasized teaching Western art and was used as a tool to introduce colonial culture to Indonesian society. Meanwhile, the independent curriculum, which will be introduced in 2022, focuses on flexibility, creativity and developing student character through more open and contextual arts education. Despite changes in the approach and goals of arts education, some aspects of colonial arts education continue to influence this curriculum. This research uses a library approach with methods of collecting library data, reading, taking notes and processing study materials. The results of this research show that although there are significant differences between arts education during the colonial period and the independent curriculum, the influence of colonial arts education is still visible in the approach applied in the independent curriculum. Thus, although colonial art education provides the initial foundation, the independent curriculum offers wider space for the development of art that is more contextual and relevant to current developments.
